The Swan Maiden The Celtic Nights Series Book 2 edition by Susan King Romance eBooks

I had never read this series, and started with #3 The Sword Maiden before this. This is the better book, with all the action and suspense we were given to believe would be in the third. In this go-round, our heroine here, Juliana, lacks major sense, and appears determined to defy a king who despised her, a vicious despot, longing to chop off her head. Our hero is Gawain, a knight who displeased that same king who spitefully forced him to marry her. Juliana continually carps at Gawain to remove chains the king ordered her to wear at all times or to let her escape, although his entire family would be condemned and put to the sword. She knows this, so having to plod through pages of such dialog is nothing more than annoying filler and takes away from the story which is rather good.

The Swan Maiden The Celtic Nights Series Book 2 edition by Susan King Romance eBooks Reviews

Again, Susan King writes a loves story to enchant us! I enjoyed this book. Gawain is a true hero, a genuinely great guy. He isn't overly macho like most leading men, he is caring, loving, and damned sexy without being a brute. Juliana is a terrific mate for him, the true swan maiden. I must agree with another reviewer, reading Laird of the Wind would help with the hero's background but you will still understand the story, i read it afterward and didn't enjoy Swan Maiden any less. I also LOVED the Sword Maiden and I am now reading the Stone Maiden. What will i do when this book is finished... find another Susan King book!
If you want to spend some time being swept away to another time and world, experience deep love and devotion between a strong/handsome/gentle/sexy male and a strong willed, sensible female and meet lively supporting characters, if you want to laugh and cry, if you want to be pulled in deeply between the covers of the book and emerge at the end with a smile on your face read Swan Maiden or any of Susan King's books. I am an avid reader and I have never found an author better than Susan King at creating worlds and people you cherish long after the book is closed. She is a very gifted author. Don't cheat yourself and pass her by. You won't regret the time spent.
The author brings Celtic legends to life and plausibly wends her half Scottish, half English hero through his competing loyalties. Also brings some lovely prose "She straightened inside the lancet like a saint in a niche."
I was afraid I wasn't going to like this book because I just wasn't crazy about the Stone Maiden. (It was soooo slow.) I will simply say that the Swan Maiden is heartwarming and genuine and I really enjoyed it. The only drawback is that you should read Laird of the Wind before you read this one so you can understand the hero's history with some of the characters. I love the main characters and think that the supporting characters were very well written into the story. I love that Gawain isn't fake, macho, or too perfect to be real. (So many medivals do this to the hero and it gets really stale.) Juliana isn't so stubborn or headstrong that she ruins their relationship when something goes wrong. She is also not a twit, for which we can all be thankful. I am relatively new to Susan King, but I think she is a promising writer and I will probably continue to buy her books. Don't miss this one.
In The Swan Maiden, King, takes the reader back to the Scottish epic scenarios, where the most rebellious and courageous girl, and the most noble and remarkable knight are almost predestined to meet and fall hopelessly in love with each other, but the old torture technique is forced upon them they have what it seems like impossible choices to make. Throughout most of the book, both Juliana and Gawain have to constantly face the dilemma of choosing between the reason and the heart, because the combination of the two seem inconceivable to them, and it's interesting -and often humorous-, to watch this, as both heart and reason have equally valid reasons (such as family, homeland, honor, self-preservation, and so on) that can weigh the same on the scale of the final decision.
I loved this book, couldn't put it down and would recommend it to medieval historical romance fans everywhere, even if this is a difficult title to get -looks like it's out of print! (
When Susan King sets out to entrances a reader she never fails. This book held me spellbound. The idea of an ancient table brought to life is all and more this reader could ask for. Great characters full of depth and harboring secrets that could make or break a true love store is enthralling. The bad guy has steeped himself in dark tales of magic but is it real? You will have to read to disclose answers.
Set in Scotland and England in the early 14th century, this is the tale of Sir Gawain Avenel, a noble knight, who is half Scot, born Gabhan McDuff. When his father was killed and their castle burned, his English mother took him to England where his stepfather, a nobleman, raised him.

King masterfully weaves history, legend and great storytelling into a wonderful medieval romance. Sir Gawain is the knight who aided Jamie Lindsay and Isobel Seton in LAIRD OF THE WIND, the first book in the trilogy.

Though raised in England, Sir Gawain never forgot his Scottish roots. His gallantry (he has a propensity to come to the aid of those in need) leads him to rescue the proud Scottish beauty, Juliana Lindsay ("the Swan Maiden") when her castle is attacked. Years later, he comes to her rescue again at King Edward's court when he seeks to embarrass her by challenging his knights to tame "the Swan."

Each must come to terms with their true nature and loyalty as they also deal with their passion and love for each other.

Definitely an impressive sequel and worth the read.
