These poems, as the title suggests, were written a long time ago – mostly in the early nineties. It was a period that was overshadowed for me by the loss of both friends and family and many of the poems are thus infused with a kind of rosy nostalgia, though hopefully not morbidity. Old churches seem to figure rather prominently, for a reason I can’t explain, as does nature, the English countryside and the seasons. They are not written in a style I would not use now but, nonetheless, I thought they were worth preserving in case somebody enjoys them.

POEMS FROM LONG AGO eBook PETER DAVEY

I have never reviewed poetry before, and I’ve been struggling to find the right words to convey my feelings about this collection and do it justice.

I’ve lived abroad from time to time, and several of the poems brought back memories of my longing for the English countryside. I was in tears when reading them.

The poems were written in a period when Peter suffered the loss of members of his family and friends . But the poems are not, as the author says, morbid. In fact, I found my spirits soaring like the birds in the poems, above the fields, the hills and clock towers. I was reminded of the walks which have sustained me through some difficult times. Walking my dogs in the countryside, during these times, has been a balm to my soul. There is a depth to these poems and they had the same effect. “. . . acceptance of the darkness . . . the rhythm of the beating clock”.

Peter Davey is an artist and in several poems I can see the delicate brush strokes, the subtle shades of colour. As a photographer, I was particularly drawn to WASHMORE HILL IN EARLY JULY. There are so many others I could highlight but, as I said in the opening to this review, I would struggle to do them justice.

These are poems to treasure and I will read them all, again and again. I just wish, somehow, that I could hold a book of the collection in my hands.
